Maiden Voyage of MV Aquamarine

2 September 2009
On August 26th The Port of Amsterdam welcomed the capsize bulk carrier MV Aquamarine on her maiden voyage.

Master Marfil Gerali Abarquez and James Hallworth

The 292 meter long vessel (with an almost 45 meter beam), sailing under the Greek flag, loaded coal under LBH Agency at Puerto Drummond, Colombia and sailed for Amsterdam on 12th august 2009. Under command of Master Marfil Gerali Abarquez, the Aquamarine safely completed her maiden sea passage at speeds of up to 14 knots.

The first call for the new vessel was at lightering dolphins outside the sea locks in Ijmuiden.
After discharging sufficient cargo to allow lock transit, the vessel proceeded on August 28th towards Amsterdam, docking at the OBA bulk terminal to complete unloading of her cargo of coal destined for NUON.

On Monday 31st August a group were invited to celebrate vessels maiden voyage:

  • NUON, receivers of the ships cargo
  • LBH as shipping agents for the vessel
  • OBA as discharging terminal
  • Port of Amsterdam as port authority

The group was warmly welcomed by Master Marfil Gerali Abarquez (photo, left) and owners Unisea Shipping Ltd. The crew gave an enthusiastic tour of the vessels accommodation, deck, holds and engine room, culminating in drinks on the bridge during which James Hallworth presented a plaque commemorating the maiden voyage and first port of call Amsterdam.
